While You Wait: Trusting God in the In-Between

  • Trusting God during life’s seasons of silence and uncertainty

  • “Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

“But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” – Romans 8:25

  • As we approach Easter, I am cognizant of the coming Holy Saturday – the space between death (the cross) and life (the resurrection). It is that moment when “all of heaven held its breath.”¹ It is palpable and weighty.

There are seasons of waiting in our lives that feel similarly significant. The “in-between” moments of what was and what will be. And like the three days that Jesus was in the tomb, they are often marked by silence. They feel like mourning. If we are not careful, confusion can reign and we can lose hope.

What are we to do in these moments where Jesus seems far away—and so does the hope that He carries? We are to look to the Father. Even in the silence and waiting, God is not absent. He is so close we can breathe Him in. He is working behind the scenes. He says, “Be still. Know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Ruth had to do this in her moments of “in-between”—between marriage and widowhood, Moab and Israel, poverty and provision, barrenness and motherhood. She navigated the unknown faithfully, leaning on the arm of her beloved. For the God of Israel had become the one she covenanted herself to. Rain or shine, famine or feast, Ruth abided in her beloved. You can, too.

Paul gave us a secret for how to abide in God during the “in-betweens”: wait patiently for what we hope in! (Romans 8:25) Patience is not passive. Nor is it naive. Patience is faithfully leaning into the heart of the Father despite what we see or feel. Patience is trusting in His goodness even though the wait be long.

  • This week, choose one intentional way to trust God in the in-between:

    • Reflect on your current “waiting season.”

    • Identify where you need to shift from frustration to faithful expectancy.

    • Choose one small act of trust you can take this week (prayer, serving, surrendering control, etc.).

  • Lord,

Thank You for working in the waiting.

Help me to trust that You are present, even in the silence.

Renew my hope, strengthen my heart, and give me patience as I wait.

Let Your peace settle in the quiet places.

    Amen.

    • What are you currently waiting on God for?

    • What has God taught you in past seasons of waiting?

    • How have you seen His faithfulness in the “in-between”?

    • How does remembering the Resurrection give you hope in the silence?

    • What would trusting God more fully in this season look like for you?
